Young people who have been affected by CSE or targeted for grooming by a sex offender are often expected to disclose a lot of information about their lives, histories, friends, sexual health – and the abuse they have experienced. It should be understood as completely rational for a child to close down and refuse to tell a professional anything about themselves – and yet it leaves many wondering what they could have done differently or why the child doesn’t trust them. This course will take professionals through the experiences of children, the experiences of professionals, and the evidence surrounding disclosure, rapport building, and barriers to relationship building.

Professionals will learn the most common barriers to rapport building, why children should not be expected to disclose, and how to avoid strategies that mirror the behaviours and techniques of the sex offender.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

1. To understand the barriers children face in disclosure, trusting adults, and engaging with services after CSE
2. To explore the reasons why children cannot disclose or engage
3. To use child-centred techniques, participation, and basic counselling skills to help children feel comfortable talking about their exploitation and trauma

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
