A young person’s behaviour can be defined as “challenging” if it puts them or those around them at risk, or leads to a poorer quality of life. It can also impact on their ability to join in with everyday activities. Challenging behaviour can include aggression, self-harm, destructiveness, and disruptiveness.

Communication is the main way we interact and express our needs, likes, and dislikes. If communication is a problem, it can be very frustrating for the person and may result in challenging behaviour. If this behaviour leads to the desired outcome, it may be repeated again and again.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. To understand identifying and recording behaviours that challenge
  2. To know how to identify and minimise risk-taking behaviours
  3. To understand the effective use of de-briefing and supervision
  4. To understand how to repair and rebuild relationships and move forward
  5. To accurately record, report, and update care plans, risk assessments, and appropriate matching in line with the children’s homes regulations framework

This course provides professionals who work with children and young people the means to advance their knowledge of therapeutic care.
